Kashi Yatra : A Holy & Sacred Journey In Hindu Culture
Among the Baja Bhajantris, the groom participates in a playful event called Kashi Yatra. He carries an umbrella, holds a stick in his hand, wears sandals on his feet, and adorns a yellow cloth around his neck. Symbolically, he declares his intention to go on a pilgrimage to Kashi (Varanasi) and take sanyasa (renunciation). However, Purohita (Guru) advises him that this impulsive decision is not appropriate. Instead, he suggests embracing Grihasthashram (married life), enjoying worldly pleasures responsibly, and attaining perfect Vairagya (detachment) before entering Vanaprasthashram (the stage of gradual withdrawal from worldly affairs) along with his wife.
The relatives from the bride’s side, such as the brother-in-law, uncle, and grandfather, playfully express their desire to marry their “girl” who is adorned with gold ornaments and propose that the groom first visit their house to receive hospitality. They discourage the idea of Kashi Yatra.
Kashi Yatra & Wedding Celebrations
This moment adds a fun element to the wedding celebrations. After the graduation ceremony, all the relatives and friends of the groom depart for the bride’s house (lodging house). Before embarking on the journey, they take a bath and get ready, make necessary travel preparations, and recite a mantra to ward off any obstacles or disruptions during the journey. Some communities may not follow this tradition. During this time, they also recite various auspicious omens to ensure a successful and auspicious journey.
