Samavartanam : A Significant Milestone In Student’s Life & Importance Of Guidance & Happy Beginning
Samavartanam : The rite you are referring to is performed when a student completes his studies and leaves the Gurukul (traditional educational institution). It is a significant milestone in the student’s life and is often referred to as graduation. This ceremony acknowledges the student’s commitment to celibate asceticism and marks the end of their formal education.
At the conclusion of the yajnyagas (sacred rituals), the student takes the Avabhrita bath, symbolizing the completion of their educational journey. The student is recognized as a Vidyasagarani, which signifies a disciplined and successful student who has acquired Vedic knowledge and is now ready to embark on the next phase of life. This phase could involve getting married and leading a domestic life.
Returning home after graduation is a momentous occasion for the student. Equipped with the knowledge and wisdom gained during their studies, they are prepared to lead a life free from physical and mental attachments. There are two paths that the graduate may choose to follow: the path of Upakurvan, which involves entering into worldly pursuits, and the path of Naishthika, which involves a continued pursuit of spiritual growth. However, it is essential to seek the Guru’s permission before embarking on any path.
Upon returning home, the student offers Gurudakshina (a gift or offering) to the Guru as a token of gratitude and respect. This Gurudakshina can be in various forms, depending on the student’s means. Even if the student is unable to give anything as Gurudakshina, seeking the Guru’s permission is of utmost importance.
Samavartanam & Modern Education
In modern education, degrees are classified into three types: diploma, graduation, and post-graduation. However, in the Gurukul system, the completion of education and return to one’s home is recognized with the awarding of “Vidyasnatakam” (graduation certificate). Additionally, those who have completed all the vows and disciplines in the Gurukul may receive “Vratasnatakam,” and for those who have fulfilled both educational and disciplinary aspects, “Ubhayasnatakam” is conferred.
Thus, the rite performed upon completion of studies and leaving the Gurukul signifies the student’s graduation and readiness to embark on the next phase of life, while also acknowledging the importance of the Guru’s guidance and blessings.
