Pelli Choopulu : An Important Event In Hindu Tradition

Pelli Choopulu : An important event in Hindu marriages where the bride and groom have their first meeting. According to Hindu tradition, it is believed that a girl should not see her mother-in-law’s house until the wedding day. Therefore, the marriage ceremony takes place at the bride’s house.

During Pelli Choopulu, five relatives from the groom’s side visit the bride’s house. The bride is dressed up and presented to the groom for the first time. If both the bride and groom like each other, the elders discuss dowry and exchange gifts. Once the liking is mutual, the families gather at the groom’s house to further discuss traditions, customs, and family practices.

Pelli Choopulu & Traditions

Although there is a ban on dowry, traditionally the parents of the bride and groom still discuss dowry gifts, ornaments, and jewelry while deciding the date of engagement.

For a perfect bridal look, certain factors are considered auspicious. It is preferred to hold the Pelli Choopulu on any day except Mondays and Tuesdays. The ceremony should happen on the following Nakshatras (constellations): Bharani, Krittika, Artha, Ashlesha, Pubba, Visakha, Jyestha, Purvashadha, and Purvabhadra. Similarly, it should avoid being scheduled on Tiths (lunar days) other than Chavati, Shashti, Ashtami, Dwadashi, and Amavasya. During this time, it is advisable to abstain from engaging in negative or evil deeds and align oneself with the positive energies of the planets.

Bridal looks for Pelli Choopulu are typically arranged during the daytime to ensure a radiant and beautiful appearance for the bride.
