Parrot Prophecy : A Traditional Practice For Fortune Telling

Parrot Prophecy : Chilakajosyam is a form of prophecy where the person seeking guidance interacts with a parrot kept in a cage. The individual interested in chilakajosyam approaches the parrot fortune-teller, who has saffron on their face, and forearms, an umbrella on their scalp, a kadiyam on their feet, and earrings on their ears. They also carry a parrot cage under their armpit.

In chilakajosyam, the parrot is trained to pick cards from a stack of ten or twelve covers arranged in a row. The person seeking guidance pays a fee, mentions their name, and the parrot owner opens the cage door to allow the parrot to come out. The parrot then nervously looks at its owner and uses its beak to select one of the covers from the stack and places it aside. The parrot brings the selected card and gives it to the person seeking the prophecy.

The covers contain images of deities such as Venkateswara Swamy, Satyannarayana Swamy, Anjaneyaswamy, Parvati Parameswara, Sita Rama Lakshmana, Durga, etc. Another piece of paper may contain predictions such as the fulfillment of a dream in six months or a change in horoscope after the next new moon. These interpretations are then read by a soothsayer who applies them to the desires of the seeker, explaining how the figures and predictions in the cards favor or relate to the person.
