Onilu Panchalu : An Auspicious & Sacred Ritual

Onilu Panchalu : A Ceremony is typically conducted in the evening,On the chosen auspicious day, begin by taking a morning bath and wearing freshly washed clothes. Then, proceed to the nearest temple to perform Abhisheka (ritualistic bathing of the deity) and seek the blessings of the Lord.

Onilu Panchalu & Items Required

The following items are required for the ceremony are Sweets, hots, fruits, leaves, vakka (decorative items), gold item (optional), and distribution materials for the guests.

First, the girl should be adorned and presented with fruits and tambulam (betel leaves and nuts) in her hand. She should be seated on a chair arranged on the stage designated for the ceremony. The grandparents should then perform akshinthas, and offer arathi (lighting of camphor) to the girl.

Next, the uncle and aunt should place the skirt, oni (blouse), jacket, and tambulam together on a plate and give it to the girl, blessing her with akshintas. Following this, the girl’s mother and other female relatives should rise from their seats, help the girl put on the new clothes provided by the uncle, and then sit again on the decorated chair.

Subsequently, two married women should perform akshintas on the girl’s head, sing the arati song, apply arati (lighted lamp) to her eyes, and bless the child. This ceremony is joyful for those who witness it, as they offer their blessings.

Dinner should be arranged for the guests attending the ceremony.

Additionally, an envelope containing sweets, hots, tambulam, fruit, and other items should be given to the guests as a token of gratitude.

Panchelu:

Panchelu refers to the groom’s side of the ceremony.

The groom should be presented with panche (traditional dhoti), scarf, pants, and shirt, along with tambulam in his hand.

The treatment and rituals for the boy should be conducted in a similar manner to those performed for the girl.
