Muhurtha Nischayam : Choosing An Auspicious Day For Sacred Rituals
Muhurtha Nischayam : In Hindu astrology, the strength of the Moon is considered crucial when deciding a muhurta (auspicious time) for an event. The strength of the Moon is determined based on its placement in the zodiac sign at the desired muhurta time. To calculate the Moon’s strength, the sign in which the Moon is located during the birth of the person for whom the muhurta is being determined is considered.
Counting from the birth sign, the position of the Moon sign on the day of the desired muhurta is calculated. The following guidelines are typically followed:
In Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the moon): Positions 2, 5, and 9 are considered good, while positions 4, 8, and 12 are considered weak.
In Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of the moon): Positions 2, 5, and 9 are considered weak, while other positions are considered good.
If the Moon is in positions 4, 8, or 12 during Shukla Paksha, it is not considered strong. Similarly, if the Moon is in positions 2, 5, or 9 during Krishna Paksha, it is considered weak. In all other positions, the Moon is considered to have strength.
Apart from Moon strength, other factors such as Tara Balam (strength of stars), Chandra Balam (strength of the Moon), Lagna Balam (strength of the ascendant), Panchakarahitham (avoidance of Panchaka period), and Ekavinsati Maha Doshas (avoidance of 22 major inauspicious combinations) are also taken into consideration while determining the auspicious muhurta.
Muhurtha Nischayam & Selection
The selection of the muhurta for specific rituals or events, such as house entry, upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony), and marriage, also involves considering the favorable tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), and nakshatra (constellation).
By carefully observing these factors and choosing an auspicious muhurta, the intention is to ensure the smooth and harmonious implementation of the desired task, particularly in the case of Vedic marriage and house entry rituals.
