Gothram : A Significant & Important Ritual In Hindu Wedding
Gothram : Once the Gauri Puja is completed, the formal Gotra-Pravara program of both parties takes place, which is quite intriguing due to the expertise of the priests. “Gotram” refers to the clan, while “Pravara” represents the lineage of the men belonging to that clan.
The main purpose of this ceremony is for the groom’s father, on behalf of the groom’s family, to seek the bride’s hand in marriage from the bride’s family. It begins with the recitation of the following invocation:
“Chatussagara paryantham go Brahmanebhya sshubham bhavatu – trayaggeya pravaranvita yajurvedine , taittiriya shakhadhyaine , apastamba sutrine , sharmana namra , sharmana poutraya , sharmana putraya , .. sharmane varaya , bhavadiyam kanyam prajasahtva karmabhyo pranimahe .
By sharing these specific details of the groom’s lineage, the bride’s family can carefully consider the proposal. If the bride’s family does not possess this information, they can state that they are currently unaware but are open to the possibility.
Upon hearing the details of the groom’s family lineage, if the bride’s family finds the match suitable, they should promptly provide the details of their daughter and express their willingness to proceed with the marriage.
Gothram & Marriage Rules
According to the teachings of Gautama and Apastamba, marriages between individuals belonging to the same Sagotriya (same clan) should not and cannot take place. This is because those born in the same gotra are considered akin to siblings, such as the offspring of a mother’s sister, a sister’s younger brother, a father’s daughter, or a mother’s son.
