Engagement : A Commitment made by a promise to establish a relationship and unite in marriage within a specific or relatively short period of time. It is a ceremony where the betrothed couple seeks the blessings of elders through Vedic mantras for their upcoming marriage.
After the Commitment, the boy is referred to as the bridegroom and the girl as the bride until the actual wedding takes place. The ceremony involves reciting Vedic mantras, where the couple is officially announced as engaged. The bride is presented with new clothes, jewelry, etc., which she wears, and her forehead is adorned with saffron. Flowers and fruits are placed on a plate, and the couple seeks blessings from the elders. The moment is celebrated with the exchange of Lagna Patrikas (engagement letters) and Tambulas (betel leaves and nuts) between the families, signifying the agreement and blessings for the union. This ceremony is known as Nichhya Tambulam and engagement.
During the Commitment, the couple exchanges ring, symbolizing their commitment. It is considered a significant step towards marriage. It is customary to document all the details related to the engagement on a piece of paper to ensure that both parties remember the agreed terms and conditions.
Engagement & Auspicious Time
Choosing an auspicious muhurta (auspicious time) is important, just like at a wedding. The engagement marks the beginning of the relationship between the bride and groom, and the influence of their horoscopes on each other begins from this moment.
Therefore, it is advisable to consider factors such as Tithi (lunar day), Wara (weekday), Nakshatra (constellation), and Lagna (ascendant) when selecting the muhurta. Performing Ganapati Puja (worship of Lord Ganesha) on the engagement day is considered auspicious. It is recommended to conduct the ceremony in the morning, as performing the puja after a meal is considered ineffective.
