Elugubantla veshalu : A Traditional Disguises During Occasion Creating Fun

Elugubantla veshalu : In the past , Bear disguises were primarily seen during celebrations and festive occasions. Two individuals would dress up as bears, wearing wooden bear faces attached to their heads and donning thick jute fiber dyed black to resemble bear hair. They would then perform a dance known as the “bear ball” while accompanied by an instrument called the “Tasa.”

The Tasa is an instrument that hangs from the neck down to the heart, played with both hands using sticks. It carries a symbolic representation of power. Typically made of wood and painted, it features a face with a protruding tongue, large eyes, and a black cloak on top. The performers, dressed as bears, would hold a sword in one hand and a spike in the other, adding to the visual spectacle.

The sight of these bear disguises was both delightful and terrifying, captivating both children and adults. The performers would entertain the crowd, moving around energetically and occasionally startling the audience. These traditional costumes were once beloved and enjoyed by people of all ages during festive celebrations.
