Shashtipurthi : A Significant event that takes place when a person completes 60 years of age. It is believed that when a person enters their 60th year, the concept of death known as “Ugraratha” becomes prominent. Similarly, when a person reaches 70 years of age, they are said to encounter the death defect known as “Bhimaratha.” To counter this, the Bhimarathashanti ceremony is performed. It is a way to seek blessings, protection, and well-being for the individual.

Furthermore, when a person completes 78 years, the Vijayarathashanti ceremony is performed. This ceremony signifies overcoming challenges and celebrating victory in life.

At 83 years and 4 months from birth, one thousand lunar sightings are completed, and the Sahasra Chandrapurna Darshan is recommended to be performed. This ceremony acknowledges the longevity of the individual and marks a significant milestone in their life.

According to the scriptures, when a person completes a hundred years, the Purna Satabhishekam ceremony should be conducted. This is a grand celebration to honor the individual’s long and fulfilled life.

Shashtipurthi & Rituals

During the Shashtipurthi celebration, it is customary for the husband and wife to take a bath in the morning. If the parents are present, they are seated in a chair, and the couple circumambulates around them, seeking their blessings and offering akshintas (consecrated rice) to them. It is then common to visit a nearby temple and participate in the pooja abhishekam (ritual bath) ceremony. Throughout the year, if possible, performing pujas with gotra names (ancestral lineage) is considered auspicious. Those who have the means can make the celebration more elaborate and grand. It is advisable to consult Brahmins and follow their guidance to perform the ceremony as per traditions and customs.
