Dhruva Nakshatram : An Important & Significant Practice In Vedic Culture

Dhruva Nakshatram : The tradition of showing the newlyweds the North Pole star, which is known for its stability and eternal presence in the sky, holds significance in Vedic culture. This practice can be observed during both daytime with the darshan (sight) of the sun and at nighttime with the darshan of the Pole Star.

Dhruva Nakshatram & Pole Star

The Pole Star, also known as Polaris, stands out prominently in the sky and symbolizes stability and eternity. It is considered a guiding light. By reciting the mantra “Mam Dhruvakshiti Dhruvayonih Dhruvamasi Dhruvashittamvanm Nakshatraanam Methyasi Samapahi Pritanyatah,” which translates to “O polar star! You are the gift of an indestructible permanent abode,” the bride seeks the stability and permanence symbolized by the Pole Star.

The reference to other nakshatras (stars) revolving around the Pole Star signifies that they find their stability and direction based on their position. Similarly, the bride expresses her desire to find stability and permanence in her husband’s home. By invoking the Pole Star, she seeks its blessings to grant her the same stability and eternal bond in her married life.

This tradition emphasizes the importance of stability, constancy, and eternal love in the marital relationship, drawing inspiration from the celestial realm and the symbolic significance of the Pole Star.
