Pasupu Kottuta : A Significant & Important Event In Marriage

Pasupu Kottuta : The process you described is a traditional custom involving the use of turmeric to start the preparations for a marriage. Here’s an explanation of the steps involved:

  1. Choosing an auspicious day: The process begins on an auspicious day chosen for initiating the wedding preparations.
  2. Applying turmeric: Take a pestle and apply a palm-sized amount of turmeric on all four sides. Roll the pestle in the turmeric to ensure that it is coated. Then, add five drops of saffron to the turmeric.
  3. Tying the betel leaf: Take a yellow betel leaf and tie it to five strands of thread. These threads are then tied to both the bride and the groom. This act symbolizes the union of the couple.
  4. Writing turmeric on the feet of five elders: Write turmeric on the feet of five respected elders as a mark of respect and seeking their blessings for the upcoming marriage.
  5. Beating turmeric on roti: Take five turmeric roots and beat them on a roti (Indian bread). This is done to infuse the essence of turmeric into the roti.
  6. Grinding turmeric horns: The turmeric horns are finely ground, and the resulting powder is mixed with Talambra rice. This mixture is considered auspicious.
  7. Offering fruit tambulams: Put a drop of saffron on the face of each of the elderly individuals and offer them fruit tambulams (betel leaves and other items offered as a gesture of respect).
  8. Repairing the rice bowl: Rice is poured into a bowl, and it is repaired by five Muthaidus (traditional drummers or musicians). This act symbolizes the sanctification of the rice and its use in the upcoming marriage ceremonies.
  9. Other marriage preparations: Following these rituals, various other preparations for the marriage can commence, such as purchasing a new saree for the bride and painting the house.
