Veeranatyam : A Heroic & Popular Dance
Veeranatyam : During the period of widespread promotion of Veerashaivism in Andhra Pradesh, not only did the Devadasis perform dances in the temples, but the Shiva devotees who followed the Tandava style also engaged in heroic dancing. These devotees would dance with great valor, wielding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other, while reciting important literary works. This style of dance came to be known as Veeranatyam, which closely resembled a dance performed in times of war.
Veeranatyam & Veeru Kolupu
The tradition of Veeru Kolupu was established to commemorate the bravery of the warriors of Andhra who displayed great courage in ancient battles. The worship dances performed during this event also followed the Tandava method. Even today, the sacrifices and rituals honoring these heroes are held annually in Karyamapudi, Macherla, and Gurjala Munnagu in the Palnati taluka.
