Gujjana Gullu : A Popular Game Played By Young Children In Joint Families
Gujjana Gullu : Buvvalata also known as lakkapidatas, is a traditional game that used to be played by young children in joint families. Here’s a description of the game and its associated traditions:
- Children, along with their elders, bring rice, pulses, marmaras (puffed rice), jaggery, and sugar to play the game.
- The children pour these ingredients into lakkapidatas, which are small pots placed on a stove.
- While pretending to cook and serve food, everyone sits together and enjoys eating together.
- During the game, dolls are married and divided into two teams. Gujjanagools (pretend dinner items) are prepared and served to the children.
- Well-ripened tamarinds are collected, and the pulp is skillfully removed. Rice is then poured into the tamarind pulps, which are cooked in a hot oven. These cooked tamarinds with rice inside are called Gujjana Gullu.
- The children participate in a ceremony where they eat the Gujjana Gullu
Gujjana Gullu & Associated With Traditions
This game and its associated traditions are mentioned in the Bhagavata, where Rukmini and Garika play the game with Gujjananests.
Unfortunately, this game has become almost extinct today due to modern education, modern games, and the disintegration of joint families. However, Buvvalata goods are still made by the people of Etikoppaka village in Visakhapatnam district, and they are also sold at handicraft fairs in cities.
The game of Buvvalata reflects Indian tradition and the importance of the family system. It serves as a reminder of the cultural heritage and values that parents can teach their children, especially in a world influenced by Western culture.
