Gobbemmala Koluvu Veduka : An Entertaining Event In Sankranti

Gobbemmala Koluvu Veduka : During Sankranti, girls in all parts of Andhra Pradesh create various types of Ranga Vallu (rangolis) in front of every house and place Gobbemmas on them. These Gobbemmas are decorated with turmeric and saffron flowers. They are known by different names in different regions, such as Gobbemmal, Guruga, and Gobbiyyall. The markets during Sankranti are filled with these Gobbemmas.

Girls dance with Gobbemmas during the Sankranti festival. The joy of girls knows no bounds during this time. The crops are harvested and brought home, filling the houses with grains. The children of farmers who have brought Panta Lakshmi (harvested crops) home celebrate this festival with joy. All the houses are beautifully decorated with Gobbemmas.

In some regions, Gobbi Gauri Vratham is performed. People gather around Gobbemmas, sing songs, and dance to fulfill their various desires. The girls sing wonderful songs while playing around these Gobbemmas. They pray to the deity Gobbidevatha to bless them with a happy family life and prosperity.

There are two types of Gobbis: Thalli (mother) Gobbi and Pilla (baby) Gobbi. Thalli Gobbi has five Gobbemmas, while Pilla Gobbi has three. Elderly women make rangolis, while young girls make Gobbemmas using cow dung, symbolizing the Gopis and devotees of Krishna. The colorful flower petals and turmeric-saffron on the heads of these Gobbemmas represent pious women whose husbands are alive. Gopis are symbolic of the forms of those Gopika women + Dolls = Gobbemmas. The larger Gobbemma in the middle represents Godadevi. On Sankranti days, girls go around these Gobbemmas, singing songs and dancing, praying for devotion to Krishna. This is known as Sande Gobbemma.

Gobbemmala Koluvu Veduka & Making

To make Gobbemmas with cow dung, girls gather cow dung and shape them into round lumps. They make a hole in the upper part and insert pumpkin flowers. These Gobbemmas are then arranged beautifully in a row between the rangoli. Fruits are offered to them. Girls dressed in colorful attire stand in a circle, clapping their hands and singing songs. They take steps and increase the speed according to the rhythm of the song, singing Gobbi songs with great enthusiasm. When Gobbi songs are sung like this in front of every house, the entire market becomes beautiful. If renowned poets like Annamayya had written Gobbi songs, we would have recognized their significance.
