Kucha Kucha Pullalu : A Funny Game Played By Children Sitting In The Sand

To play this game, called Vennelavarthi, Vennelapatti, or Dudumpullata, two children sit in the sand. One child tells the other to close their eyes. Meanwhile, the first child takes a matchstick, about three inches long and four inches high, and hides it skillfully in the sand. Then, the first child sings a song to provide hints about the location of the hidden matchstick. The song goes like this:

“Venaka Venaka Vemula thota
Kanakahadlu Kamunirupulu
Meghashankulu Mettani Gollu
Doodimanulu Duppatti rekulu”

Translation :
“Behind, behind, in the sandy field,
Golden sparrows, silver coins,
Cloud-shaped hills, shining dolls,
Black ants, long roads.”

Alternatively, the game can be played without closing the eyes. In that case, the first child must be careful not to reveal where the matchstick is hidden. The children can sing the following song while playing:

“Chik Chik Pulla, Shikaru Pulla
Dongalosthunnaru, Dakko Pilla”

“Chik Chik Pulla, Shikaru Pulla
The thieves are coming, catch them, my child.”

In some versions of the game, the song may be sung in a slightly different way:

“Kuchchu Kuchchu pulla
kuraku pulla
dommarodostadu
dakkove pulla
doodu pulla
doorai pulla
chudakunda
Jaada teeyi
udakunda
pullatiy!“

Translation:
“Hush, hush, little pulla (matchstick),
Hiding, hiding,
The thief is here,
Catch the pulla,
The pulla is under the hand,
Without looking,
Bring it out,
The pulla is found!”

If the second child correctly guesses where the matchstick is hidden, they have won the game. The winner then starts the next round. This is how the game continues with both hiding and searching for the matchstick in the sand.
